Simple Gift Ideas Using Essential Oils

During the holiday season, one of the most treasured traditions is to not only give gifts to your loved ones, but to make those gifts. You can use essential oils not only to make gifts, but simple ones that don’t require a lot of time. Here are some simple gift ideas that use essential oils.

Lotion or Foot Cream

The simplest way to make a gift that uses essential oils is to start with a product that is already made. This allows you to personalize it and make it appropriate for the holiday season, but without doing too much work. For example, get a lotion or foot cream with no or minimal scent, and add some essential oils to it. You can go simple with vanilla or
peppermint, or put some scents together into your own blend. Who doesn’t want to use their favourite hand cream that now smells like a candy cane or winter forest?

Scented Christmas Ornaments

There are also a few different varieties of scented Christmas ornaments that you can make. The first, and possibly easiest, you can make is a clay ornament. This allows you to really control the shape, design, and size of the ornament, while also adding in your scent. What you want to do is while your clay is still wet and before molding it, add in
your oils. Since you will be touching the clay directly with your hands, either dilute the oils with a carrier oil first, or use a spray bottle with distilled water and essential oils and spray into the clay. You can then mold it into your ornament, bake it, and it will smell like the oils you used.

Homemade Coffee Scrub

If you want to give a friend something that helps to pamper them for the holidays, a coffee scrub is a great option. This is really easy to make, can be a lot of fun, and as an added bonus, your home will smell amazing while making it! Plus, it is easy to make large batches and put them in smaller mason jars to give out to more than one person during the holidays. For a coffee scrub, all you need is freshly-ground coffee, brown sugar, essential oils, and carrier oils. Just combine the mixture well and keep in jars or containers with airtight lids.

Gel Air Freshener

You might know how to make other homemade air freshener, but have you thought about a gel air freshener? This can easily use any essential oils, from vanilla and cinnamon to special holiday blends. The gel in the air freshener is done with polymer absorbent crystals, which can be added to a container with water and the oils.

Essential Oil Gift Ideas for Kids

While many DIY products and gifts that include essential oils are advertised to adults, don’t forget about kids and teens! There are actually many amazing gifts you can make using essential oils and other natural ingredients that are perfect for the kids during the holidays and other times of the year. Here are a few different options.

Bath Bombs for Kids

The first type of gift you can make for kids that use essential oils is your bath bombs. These are a great alternative to making bubble bath and other fun bath products. The bombs are placed into a tub of warm water, where the kids can have fun watching the water change colors. You are able to make it more of a seasonal gift appropriate for kids by using silicone molds of fun shapes, from Christmas trees to train and cars. Bath bombs typically use a combination of water, baking soda, and citric acid to make them.

Essential Oils to Avoid Using

Before you get into making the DIY gifts for your kids, make sure you only use certain oil scents. There are some that are not good for children, especially toddler-age and younger children. It is important that you not use these scents or blends that contain them. For holiday blends, some might include the scents, so be really careful when making your choices. The essential oils not generally safe for young children are:

Eucalyptus
Peppermint
Wintergreen
Sage
Hyssop
Clary Sage

Make Sure the Oils are Diluted

Naturally, you want to make sure your essential oils are diluted properly when using them with kids. Nobody should have essential oils directly on their skin without diluting with carrier oils, since they are too strong to come in contact with the skin. However, while adults sometimes experience mild skin irritation, it is always too strong for
sensitive baby skin. For your kids, dilute it even more and always use high-quality carrier oils. There is no reason you need an extra-strong DIY product using essential oil, so dilute them more than you normally would.

Test Their Skin

If you are making soap, lotion, or other baby products, test the diluted oil on a small area of your child’s skin before using them. That way, if there is irritation or allergic reactions, it is only one small area and not all over their skin before getting it treated.

I hope you have some fun making some homemade gifts using essential oils for some special people in your life this holiday season. Let me know which ones are your favourite in the comments.
